The Refugees of Shangri-La

The Refugees of Shangri-La is a stunning documentary so good we are bringing it back for those who missed it in 2015, as part of our Special Double Feature Night also featuring Renga for the West! Bhutan's international reputation precedes it as the Himalayan Kingdom of "Gross National Happiness." However, Bhutan's Nepali exiles will tell you a different story: one of cultural persecution, loss of a beloved home, a twenty-year wait in refugee camps and finally, a new chance in a new country. Over 85,000 Bhutanese refugees have resettled in America and thousands more in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. This is the story of our new neighbors, The Refugees of Shangri-La. We are thrilled to bring this film back to WNY in an encore presentation, and pair it with the Buffalo premiere of Renga for the West, which will make for a doubly enjoyable cinematic experience for the audience!

“...this documentary provides valuable insights into the plight and potential of all
refugees around the world.…”
— Craig Sanders, UNHCR
The first real public documentation of the tragedy that befell this peaceful community ... When the struggle is over and justice for the Bhutanese refugees is finally won, it will be in no small part due to this stunning film.
— Bill Gillett, Board Chair at International Institute of New England
